Air, magnetic or both: how do rower resistance types differ?

Air resistance rises with how hard you pull; a damper sets how heavy each stroke feels. Magnetic resistance is a fixed level that does not change with effort and is quieter.

What rowing machine does CrossFit use?

The Concept2 RowErg, the rower used in CrossFit competition and in most commercial gyms; times on its PM5 monitor are comparable from one machine to the next.

How much space does a rowing machine need?

The Bodycraft VR500 Pro is 98.5 by 20 inches in use and folds to 58.5 by 20 by 77 inches, per its listing; the VR200 folds and rolls too. The Concept2 RowErg is 96 by 24 inches assembled (stored size on the Concept2 page), and the SkiErg on its stand is 23.5 by 50 inches and 85 inches tall, so check your ceiling.

From our technicians: oil the RowErg chain, keep the monorail clean and check the footstraps; that is most of the maintenance a rower ever needs.

Questions we get about rowers

What are the Bodycraft rowers' user limits?

The VR500 Pro and VR500 Pro Connect are rated to 350 pounds and users to 6 feet 8 inches, per their listing; the VR200 listing gives a user height to 6 feet 4 inches but no weight limit, so ask us. For the RowErg's rating, see Concept2.

What is a SkiErg?

Concept2's standing machine that reproduces the double-pole pull of cross-country skiing: you pull two handles down from overhead against an air-resistance flywheel, working legs, core and arms. Ours comes with the free-standing floor stand.

What is the PM5 monitor?

The Performance Monitor on every Concept2 machine we sell: it runs on two D-cell batteries, draws power from the spinning flywheel during a workout, connects by Bluetooth to apps and is calibrated so times and watts compare from one machine to the next, per Concept2's listings. The Bodycraft rowers use their own LCD or touchscreen consoles.

See Concept2 for RowErg, SkiErg and BikeErg details and Bodycraft for the full line; for used, read the used home gym equipment guide. Call 208-345-2226 or visit 1852 S Century Way, Boise. Last updated: September 2026
