Fitness Facility Design and Layout in Boise

Gym Outfitters designs a complimentary room layout, included with your equipment purchase, for commercial gym rooms: send the room dimensions, ceiling height, the location of doors, windows and outlets, and how many people will use it, and we return a floor plan with a cardio and strength selection that fits.

What does the room design include?

You get a drawing, an equipment list and a price:

  • A scaled floor plan of the room with each machine placed, including the walking and stepping space around it.
  • Several options where the room allows, depending on where the doors, windows, TVs, water coolers and walkways are, so you can see how things look and fit.
  • An equipment list matched to the room: for a typical apartment or hotel room that is a treadmill, an elliptical or AMT, an upright or recumbent bike, a stepmill or climber where the ceiling allows, a functional trainer, a bench and dumbbells. Larger rooms add selectorized strength and rowers.
  • New, used or a mix, with prices for each piece.
  • Delivery and installation quoted for the address, plus the power requirement for each piece of cardio.

How does the layout process work?

  1. Send the room. Email michelle@gymoutfitters.com or call 208-345-2226 with the room's length, width and ceiling height; where the doors, windows and outlets are; the floor (slab, upstairs, basement); and how many people will use it. A floor plan or a few phone photos help.
  2. Tell us the budget and the mix. New, used, or both — used commercial pieces from our floor can stretch a budget; see commercial gym equipment in Boise.
  3. We draw it. You get a scaled layout, an equipment list and a comprehensive quote.
  4. Revise. Swap pieces, move the treadmills to the wall with the TV, drop the stepmill if the ceiling is short. Layouts are revised until the room works.
  5. Try it. Call 208-345-2226 to check which pieces on the layout are set up on our showroom floor at 1852 S Century Way before you commit.
  6. Delivery and installation. Our crew delivers, places, assembles and tests the equipment; see delivery and installation.

How much space does gym equipment need?

Use the manufacturer's figures for the exact model — we supply them with the layout — but these are the numbers we plan around. The clear-space figures are what manufacturers typically call for; they are not a Gym Outfitters standard.

Piece Footprint example from our catalog Clear space manufacturers typically call for
Treadmill Precor TRM 835: 83 × 35 in. About 20 in. (0.5 m) clear on each side and about 6.5 ft (2 m) clear behind the belt, so a user who steps off the back has room
Stepmill StairMaster 4G: 54 in. long × 29 in. wide × 64 in. tall 8 ft ceiling for the 4G; 10 ft for the 10G
Rower Concept2 RowErg: 96 × 24 in. assembled Concept2 recommends a 9 × 4 ft area to row
Walkways — A clear route of about 36 in. between rows is the common accessible-route width; plan one to any NuStep or SciFit piece

What ceiling height does a gym room need?

The machine's step-up height plus the tallest user's height plus a few inches. Many basements and older apartment fitness rooms fall short. Treadmills at full incline and ellipticals at the top of the stride also add height; we check each piece against your ceiling on the layout.

What power does commercial cardio need?

Some commercial treadmills need a dedicated 20-amp individual branch circuit: the Precor TRM 835 does, and the Precor STM 837 slat-belt treadmill needs a 120 V 20-amp individual branch circuit. Self-powered pieces such as Concept2 ergs, the Assault Runner Pro and most selectorized strength need no outlet. Put the outlet count and the circuits on the drawing before the electrician leaves.

What do you need from me to start?

Room length, width and ceiling height; door, window and outlet locations; floor type; headcount; budget; new, used or mix. Email michelle@gymoutfitters.com, call 208-345-2226, or use the contact form.

FAQ: facility design

Is there a charge for the room design?

The room design is complimentary with your purchase of equipment from Gym Outfitters. We do it because a layout drawn before delivery day avoids ceilings, doorways and circuits that do not fit.

Can you lay out a home gym, or only commercial rooms?

Home layouts are the same process: a garage bay, a basement with a low ceiling, a spare bedroom upstairs. We check the machine against your ceiling, doorway and stairs and tell you which used or new pieces fit. See the measuring notes in the used-equipment guide.

Do you need to visit the site before drawing a layout?

Not for most rooms: dimensions, ceiling height, outlet locations and a few photos are enough to draw the layout. If the room has an unusual shape, stairs or access problems, say so in the first email and we will tell you what else we need before we draw it.
